Downtown Home and Garden looks forward during historical tour
If they don't have what you're looking for, ask; it's the type of store where employees will rush to check the back room or special order things for you. It is good to know about the history of this fine old brick building. I would like to know more about Ann Arbor's old buildings. I am happy that Mr. Hodesh has kept the feeling of the building alive. There also is an upstairs, which Hodesh says people have told him was a hangout for neighborhood kids.
Food carts are more free to experiment, and have less barrier to entry for the owners, so hopefully we're going to see some really new and interesting street food popping up here . Be sure that the vendor who is preparing food and collecting money has a way to wash his or her hands in fresh running water. Food carts are nice and the food can be good, but sanitation can be a problem. I've seen these solo vendors prepare food and then handle cash with the same gloves on. Some are too lazy to change gloves for every transaction, or too lazy or cheap to take them off for cash transactions and then put on a new set of gloves for food prep.
Ann Arbor
I'm glad to see the street food carts concepts starting in Ann Arbor. Welcome to Downtown Home & Garden - a century-old retailer located in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor has always needed something somewhere in between finer restaurants and burger joints.
Ashley was erected in the mid 1890s for Mann and Zeeb Elevator, a supplier of field seed for farmers and grain for poultry. The Hertler family purchased the business in 1906, renamed it Hertler Brothers, and held onto the property for sixty-nine years. The barn they built on the south side in 1908 was at first used as a livery stable.

It's used to store seasonal items, and also houses his wife's art studio as well as Hodesh's office, which he refers to as "world headquarters." Only part of the building has a basement where several horse stalls still exist. Hodesh uses the space to store Christmas trees and potatoes. He says that when he bought the building, there were seven layers of doors leading to the basement. Mark Hodesh owner of Downtown Home and Garden, offered tours today of his historic building.
All carts require a handwash sink and must meet Washtenaw County health dept requirements regarding handwashing. Besides, if you only knew what happens at the restaurants you eat at. Not every place that serves food is 100% every time. Please before you make commentary on subjects you do not know, do a little research.
This is not sanitary and a violation of food prep laws. If it truly is to be a stand-alone "cart" set up then this needs to be addressed. If it is a "cart" attached to a building with a sink, then it would be better. If 2 people work the cart, it's better, one for cash and one for food, but access to a sink to wash hands during food prep is mandatory. The idea came to him late last summer, after the long-time tenant of the Union Building left. The 3,000-square-foot building is being renovated to accommodate a commercial kitchen, which will be used by the cart owners, Hodesh said.
When the parking structure was razed, Hodesh purchased the property. The barn was built in 1906 and used as a livery stable where people coming downtown could park for the day. A reminder of that time period is the buggy that hangs there. It was manufactured at Walker's Carriage Factory on Liberty, which is now the home of the Ann Arbor Art Center. The buggy was purchased by the Washtenaw County Historical Society and is estimated to have been built in the 1890s. Downtown Home and Garden is a hundred-year-old shop in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor.
The house of Herman Hertler, one of the owners of the original Hertler Brothers feed and seed store, which occupied the Downtown Home and Garden space, at one time rested on the land. Cart owners will pay a single fee, which has yet to be set, to use the kitchen and rent space in Mark’s Carts. Trusted, licensed warm and friendly same day services in Ann Arbor which means emergency roof repairs and installations as well as bathroom and kitchen remodeling. Also interior and exterior painting, major fire and water restorations, flooring and tile installation as well as general contracting by licensed professionals.
I too enjoy the store but have noticed an obvious change in the nature of the sales staff. Certainly not as friendly and welcoming as years past. They are so friendly and knowledgeable and always help me find the item I'm looking for. Hodesh still refers to the wide open space in the building as the barn, and the remaining part of Downtown Home and Garden as "the store." Downtown Home remained open throughout the pandemic. This should make doing business possible for many small, local people.
However, on the last couple visits, the clerks were less than friendly. Browsing should be encouraged , since purchases usually come from feeling welcome to look around. Maybe they aren't happy with their employee benefits package. Are they cutting hours to avoid paying the ACA penalty? This is important to know before we buy from them. In addition to friendly and helpful staff, you can't beat a store that has Lewis, the cat that tolerates and seems to almost enjoy toddlers.
The area will be fenced, landscaped and lighted, and will include seating. Mark Hodesh, owner of Downtown Home & Garden, will add a unique dining option to downtown Ann Arbor when he opens "Mark's Carts." DTH&G has a small parking lot of its own on the corner of Ashley and Liberty Streets; you can also drive through the gardening side to load up on compost, mulch, or lawn furniture.
Downtown Home and Garden
Downtown Home & Garden, on Ashley Street, is run by Mark Hodesh, a long-term townie who opened the Fleetwood Diner in 1971. Formerly the Hertler Brothers feed store, Downtown HG carries high-quality housewares and gardening supplies, as well as bulbs, seeds, and potted plants. "We are a product of where and what we are, and the history of this building comes out of the pores," said Hodesh. "The farmers are gone. Now our customers are urban gardeners and gourmet cooks. We've even taking on clothing lines for this coming fall." Your home in trusted hands because licensed landscaping pros in Ann Arbor promise to take care of everything for you.
